Passion, excitement, sorrow, and celebration all the room with this new exciting release of Biber: Mystery Sonatas by Julia Wedman. Though the Mystery Sonatas (also called the Rosary Sonatas) weren’t discovered until the late 19th century, these master works of violin virtuosity that employs extensive scordutura (multiple tunings) for the performer have become a favorite of Baroque Music lovers and violinists the world over.

After 2 years of research leading up to the recording, Ms. Wedman has brought a new life and impassioned vision to these works.

“Of the violin players of the last century,” wrote the 18th-century historian Charles Burney, “Biber seems to have been the best, and his solos are the most difficult and most fanciful of any music I have seen of the same period.”

Over 200 years later, scholars, audiences and performers still agree with him. Heinrich Franz Ignaz Biber, (1644-1704) was one of the most unique violin virtuosi of the late seventeenth-century. While he composed numerous vocal works, including operas, masses and cantatas, he is most notable today for his brilliant instrumental works, specifically solo violin works and chamber music.

Heinrich Biber’s enigmatic sixteen Rosary/Mystery Sonatas have captivated audiences and violinists since they were first discovered in the late 19th century. Biber wrote in his dedication page to the Archbishop Maximilian Gandolph von Khuenberg that he “consecrated these sonatas to the most glorious mysteries which you hold so highly.”

But it is the unique feature of scordatura — the complete re-tuning of the violin — that sets the Rosary/Mystery Sonatas apart. While this practice had been used in violin music before, it is in the Mystery Sonatas that Biber takes this technique to a level that had never been seen before, or ever again. Of the sixteen sonatas in the set, fourteen feature this radical technique.

Each new re-tuning of the violin sonically transforms the instrument as the violinist and audience experiences new aural effects. With each sonata, Biber creates in the violin an analogy to the ancient metaphor that the human body itself is a string instrument, resonating with the voice of God.

Originally from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canadian violinist Julia Wedman was invited to join the internationally renowned Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra in 2005. She quickly developed a reputation for her solo performances with the ensemble and is frequently showcased on Tafelmusik’s recordings as well as their home concert series in Toronto. Julia has played concertos with the group on tours throughout Canada, the U.S.A., Mexico, Puerto Rico, Europe, China and Korea.

Julia is a member of the innovative young baroque ensemble I Furiosi (ifuriosi.com), whose album Crazy (DSL-90802) is also available from Sono Luminus. She is also one quarter of the Eybler Quartet (eyblerquartet.com), a period instrument ensemble that specializes in music of the classical era, and are champions of excellent but underrated composers. As a part of the Aradia Baroque Ensemble and Toronto Camerata under the direction of Kevin Mallon, Julia also recorded many CDs available on Naxos. Ms. Wedman plays a Hendrick Jacobs violin made in Amsterdam in 1694.

This album whose stellar performance is matched with extensive scholarly notes as well as Ms. Wedman’s descriptions of her personal vision for each of the sonatas is the perfect choice for lovers of baroque performance, virtuosic violin music, and a wonderful gift for the Easter season.

It was with typical discernment that Geoffrey Webber responded to a request to put together his dream Christmas programme. Opening with Jan Sandström’s sublime deconstruction of Es ist ein Ros entsprungen, Webber’s classy choir reveals and delights in equal measure, finding space for both the Venetian lushness of Gabrieli and the distilled purity of Webern in a seasonal collection which is also sprinkled with unexpected gems of more recent provenance. Edward Higginbottom’s jazz-infused Rocking Carol, Thomas Hewitt Jones’s eloquently expressive What Child is This?, and the small miracle that is Matthew Owens’ reimagined setting of The Holly and the Ivy – all glitter in a programme that dovetails old and new with characteristic Cambridge sophistication.

Celebrating these heavenly guardians and guides, The Chants of Angels is relaxing, peaceful, uplifting. Using the ancient melodies and texts of the early church, each Gregorian chant depicts a new aspect or story of the angels. From our most intimate plea to the angels for aid, to the great announcement made by the Archangel Gabriel, The Chants of Angels surrounds the listener with these songs of prayer and comfort. Great for driving, background music, or quiet meditation.

Gourd Music is proud to release Colonial Christmas, by Barry Phillips.

On this exciting new work Barry has arranged three distinct types of music:

American choral pieces by William Billings and other early American composers, dance tunes from John Playford s The English Dancing Master, and folk tunes of the period and earlier. Selections include "The Merry Wassail," "Christ Child Lullaby," "Drive the Cold Winter Away," "Nos Galan (Deck the Hall)," "Judea," and twelve additional selections.

Barry is joined by a wealth of musicians: Swedish nyckelharpa master Olov Johansson, Scottish fiddler Sarah-Jane Summers, Celtic harpist Jesse Autumn, Welsh violinist Robert Evans, oboe and English horn player Shelley Phillips, harpsichordist Linda Burman-Hall, mountain dulcimer player Neal Hellman Hammered dulcimer player Robin Petrie, fiddler Deby Benton Grosjean, flautist Lars Johannesson and others.
Colonial Christmas is a reflection from today, a look back at a variety of music that might well have been played at a Christmas party in colonial America.

Commissioned by Dicapo Opera Theatre, Thomas Pasatieri's charge for God Bless Us, Every One! was to bring the cast of characters to the shores of America. God Bless Us, Every One! suggests what might have happened 20 years after the famous final line of Dickens' original tale.

The libretto combines the characters from A Christmas Carol with the plot of another Dickens' story, Doubledick, and mixes them all into the turbulent years during the American Civil War.

Noel The Story of Christmas is a recording of the live Public Television Award winning performance recorded by Grammy Award winning producer Jeff "Jedi Master" Jones at Flushing Town Hall in New York.

The Noel Chorale and Orchestra under the Direction of Conductor Robert G. Sonnenberg, brings alive the Story of the first Christmas by its powerful and spectacular performance of the most beautiful Christmas Carols ever written.

Internationally famed tenor, Andrew Joseph Koslosky, is the Soloist and Narrator of the Holiday program. His featured solo, Schubert's 'Ave Maria', is a highlight of the evening, as Koslosky sings in a prayerful manner, with a strong voice and perfect pitch, while singing in front of a string quartet arrangement which adds wonderful contrast and dimension to the Christmas program.

As the Narrator, Mr. Koslosky uses a wonderful and inspiring interpretation of scripture to carry the audience through the story. The very powerful piece, 'One Solitary Life', is the highlight of the narration. Grammy winner, Jeff Jones, captures the essence of the live broadcast with impeccable balance and sound production, as has become his calling card in the music industry.

Few can capture a live performance and allow the recording to keep it's energy like Jedi Master can. Did you now that five Public Charity 501(c) (3) programs benefitted from the concert Noel? This is a must have for Christmas Music lovers and a sure to please result for all listeners of spiritual and inspiring music.
