Cantus Brings Us into the Light with New Christmas Album

Cantus Brings Us into the Light with New Christmas Album

Each December, we find ourselves surrounded by winter’s darkness at the fulcrum between the old year and the new. In the shadowy stillness of these short, cold days, December is the darkroom that focuses our gaze squarely on the bright promise and growing light of the imminent new year.

Into the Light was recorded in the dark, uncertain days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, the process was imbued with optimism and hope for brighter days ahead.

In its first holiday recording in more than a decade, chamber vocal ensemble Cantus offers a thoughtful selection of old and new favorites, each sung with the group’s trademark warmth and virtuosity.

The album reflects Cantus’ commitment to diversity of repertoire. Its selections span five languages and feature works by a broad range of composers and arrangers: from John Jacob Niles and Kenneth Jennings, to Joni Mitchell and B.E. Boykin. The album also offers six pieces created specifically for Cantus, including two new arrangements from Reginald Bowens and Christopher H. Harris.

After two successful albums on Signum Records, the American vocal ensemble Cantus present their first christmas album, Into The Light.

The “engaging” (New Yorker) low-voice ensemble Cantus is widely known for its trademark warmth and blend, innovative programming and riveting performances of music ranging from the Renaissance to the 21st century.

Colours of Christmas put out by Bragernes Kirkes Ungdomskor

Colours of Christmas put out by Bragernes Kirkes Ungdomskor

Record company description: Conductor Beate Strømme Fevang writes: "Colors of Christmas" contains a collection of beautiful carols that arise out of the Christmas message of hope, anticipation and joy. Together with the girls in the choir we have selected 15 carols that mean a lot to them and for which they have a special fondness. More than half the music is Norwegian, written by composers Kim André Arnesen, Svein Møller, Tove Knutsen and Fredrik Sixten. The last-mentioned is Swedish, but was formerly Director of Music of Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, where he also lives. Many of the carols have never been recorded, and in this process we have had an exciting collaboration with several of the composers. The tracks on the album vary between a cappella choir and choir with instrumental accompaniment. Working with the instrumentalists has been very inspiring and an enriching experience for the choir and has contributed to the growth and development of the young singers. The recordings have been made in the marvelous acoustic setting of Bragernes Church, which is the choir's regular venue. The recording of this Christmas album began in the spring of 2019 but stopped entirely due to COVID-19. The remaining tracks were recorded in the spring of 2021.

The Christmas Music of Dame Elizabeth Maconchy

The Christmas Music of Dame Elizabeth Maconchy

by R. Rojas

Updated November 23, 2024.

Special Shoutout: We do a special shoutout to Multitude of Voyces who we briefly mention down below for their recent efforts of promoting and publishing Dame Maconchy's music.

Dame Elizabeth Maconchy was an Irish-English composer who is considered one of the best composers to come out of the United Kingdom and Ireland. She was born in Hertfordshire to Irish parents and was raised in both Ireland and England. She began her musical studies in Dublin, Ireland, later moving to London in 1923 to enroll in the Royal College of Music.

There she studied under Charles Wood and Ralph Vaughn Williams. As young female composer, she found options limited, but she did gather with other female composer of that time in London for support. Some of these included some of her classmates, creating one of the first women's composer groups for self-support.

She later served as chair of the Composers Guild of Great Britain. Dame Maconchy was very productive in composing for many types of ensembles including orchestras, string quartets, choirs, brass, and more, as well as for solo voice.

In the 1960s, she was given the Cobbet Medal for chamber music. She was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1977. She was elevated to Dame Commander in 1987. She passed away in 1994.

A good biography is posted on Wikipedia. There is a good but small entry on Maconchy in the Encyclopedia of World Biography. Also, the Pytheas Center for Contemporary Music has an impressive list of her works as well as bio. There is also a great article from the composer's daughter called Elizabeth Maconchy DBE (1907-1994): Some biographical and Musical Notes. (Note 1).

Dame Maconchy’s Christmas works are limited but good. She has a few winter-themed works. Most of her scores are available via Wise Music, Multitude of Voices, and other music publishers, including some for which, I could not find videos.

Christmas Works

"A Winter's Tale: soprano and string quartet [text: Kenneth Gee](1959 or 1949) - Chamber and voice. There may be not score for this.

"Christmas Morning: a Carol Cantata, soprano, treble/female voices and piano" (1960-2?)(SSAA)

"I Sing of a Maiden" from Two Carols (1966, Faber Music)(Mixed Voices)(carol for unaccompanied mixed voices)

"This Day" from Two Carols (1966)(Mixed Voices)(carol for unaccompanied high voices). Text: anonymous (c.1450)

"Down with the Rosemary and Bays: Twelfth Night Carol," 2-part chorus (1966). Also known as "Twelfth Night Song". Text: Robert Herrick. Commissioned for The Cambridge Hymnal.

"Nowell sing we now all and some: carol, 3-part chorus" (1967)(Note 2):

Update 2024: In 2024, Multitude of Voyces published the carol under the name "Nowell, Nowell, Nowell." Purchase it Now. It is available both on printed leaflet or digital. The work also appears in Multitude of Voyces:  Advent to Candlemas anthology volume (3).

"Christmas Nightcarol, 4 voice" (1975) in A Garland of Carols, text: Harleian Mss. (c.1375). Filed under 'Chappell'; Carol: 'Jesu my sweet son dear'. Warner Chappell Music.

"The Bellman/Bellman's Carolcarol, chorus (1983[5?])" (1985) (SATB), Written for Angela Dugdale and the Broadland Singers. Although I have found several videos of this carol. I have not found one credited to Maconchy. It is included in the Chester Book of Carols. text: R. Herrick.

"Christmas Eve"

In 2024, Multitude of Voyces announced that they were working with Cambridge University Press to reintroduce Dame Maconchy's 'Candlemas Eve' on the poem by Robert Herrick (SS or TT into 4-part round). Source: Facebook Page.

Winter

"For Snow" (1978, published 1979) [SATB chorus a cappella], from Four Miniatures, no. 2:

Deutsche Grammophon gifts Monteverdi's Christmas Vespers

Deutsche Grammophon gifts Monteverdi's Christmas Vespers

Deutsche Grammophon description: La Cetra's credo is to serve one purpose: to make "Early Music" accessible to today's audiences through fresh, gripping and contemporary interpretations. The Vespro veneziano that Andrea Marcon has assembled for this new recording is inspired by the resplendent sounds of the music that was performed at the great Christmas Vespers in St. Mark's in the presence of the foremost dignitaries of La Serenissima and a large audience of aristocrats and visitors from across Europe.

Chamber Opera on "Gift of the Magi" in new recording

Chamber Opera on "Gift of the Magi" in new recording

Composer Richard E Brown and Navona Records present THE GIFT OF THE MAGI, a chamber opera in one act that tells the beloved story — first published by O. Henry in 1905 — of a young married couple who, despite being very poor, sacrifice their most cherished possessions to demonstrate their love for one another. This chamber opera adds even greater breadth to the composer’s output, which has also included works for concert band and orchestra, instrumental solos and ensembles, church music, piano solos, and scores for ballet, opera, and musical theater. The virtuosic performances heard on THE GIFT OF THE MAGI lend a moving emotional dimension to this heartbreaking yet ultimately uplifting story of love and sacrifice.

The NHS responded quickly, getting me in for a successful operation within a few weeks of my diagnosis, and I'm please and relieved to say that I'm now officially in remission. We wanted to do something to support the amazing work that Cancer Research UK does to support everyone affected by cancer. Klang, min vackra bjällra i den sena kväll!
Jingle, my pretty (sleigh-)bell in the late evening!
Spring, min raska fåle över mo och fjäll!
Run, my swift steed, over heath and mountain!
Hemåt ila vi med vindens snabba fart,
We are dashing homewards with the rapid speed of the wind,
där så vila vi i mjuka armar snart,
there we will soon be resting in soft arms,
och vår lycka ingen må förtycka.
and may no-one begrudge us our happiness.
Alla kvällens norrsken flämta där i skyn,
All the northern lights* are flickering in the sky,
alla sälla minnen skymta för min syn.
all blessed memories are flitting past before my eyes.
Klang, min vackra bjällra...
Jingle, my pretty (sleigh-)bell...
Klang, min vackra bjällra, glatt i kvällens ro!
Jingle, my pretty (sleigh-)bell, merrily in the quietness of the evening!
Spring, min raska fåle över fjäll och mo!
Run, my swift steed, over mountain and heath!
Första morgonstrålen randas i vårt hem,
The first ray of morninglight is seen towards our home,
alla skogar småle och vi le åt dem.
all forests are smiling, and we are smiling back at them.
Om vi stjälpa, det kan ingen hjälpa!
If we topple, that is no-ones fault!
Syns ett ljus ej glimma i den mörka däld?
Is it not a light glimmering there in the dark glen?
Är det hemmets skimmer eller stjärnans eld?
Is that a gleam (out) from our home, or is it the fire of a star?
Klang, min vackra bjällra, ...
Jingle, my pretty (sleigh-)bell, ...
* aurora borealis
