Bach: Christmas Oratorio

Theo Adam (Artist), Annelies Burmeister (Artist), Peter Schreier (Artist), Arleen Augér (Artist), & 4 more Format: Audio CD

Label: Brilliant Classics

Johann Sebastian Bach, hero of the Baroque, has many masterpieces to his name. Among them is the Weihnachts-Oratorium BWV248, also known as the Christmas Oratorio.

The work was written in 1734 to be performed at several services spanning Christmas Day to Epiphany in Leipzig. A re-telling of the Christmas story, the work has become one of the most popular choral compositions of all time and is a regular fixture in the church and concert calendars all over the world. In a manner of parody, as was popular at the time, Bach re-purposed sections of his other cantatas, particularly the secular Laßt uns sorgen, laßt uns wachen BWV213, Tönet, ihr Pauken! Erschallet, Trompeten! BWV214 and Preise dein Glück, gesegnetes Sachsen BWV215; if you recognize the melody, youve sections, passages of the Gospel were newly composed, along with the Chorale settings.

While the soloists enact the details of the story and play the parts of different characters along the way, the Chorales represent the congregation an affirmation of their trust in God. This recording, originally released in 1974, features several world-renowned soloists at the top of their game: Arleen Augér, Peter Schreier and Theo Adam, playing the Angel, the Evangelist and Herod respectively. Other information: Recorded in 1974. Sung texts available at www.brilliantclassics.com.

Precious few countries can boast of a Christmas repertoire as ample and colourful as that possessed by the Czech Republic. The Baroque era imbued the texts of songs with enchanting, tender poetics with awestruck yet perplexed shepherds enthusing about the beautiful infant Jesus. Later on, a growing number of formally more complex pieces (pastorales) were written, most of them taking the form of arias or duets with instrumental accompaniment. A notable composer in this respect was Josef Antonín Sehling. Although still anchored in the Baroque world, he paved the way for the accession of a new musical style. He studied in Vienna and subsequently worked in Prague as a member of Count Václav Morzins renowned orchestra and as second violin at Saint Vitus Cathedral, although standing in as Kapellmeister over the long term (an interesting parallel can be drawn with Zelenka, the counter-bassist at the court orchestra in Dresden). Sehling was Kapellmeister of several Prague churches, including the Church of Our Lady under the Chain, where the present world premiere recording was made. The album features pieces intended for the period from Advent to Epiphany. Sehlings music contains the magic of Michnas songs yet concurrently opens upon a world familiar from Rybas Christmas Mass... Polish Lyrical Songs for Christmas

Barbara Zarnowiecka (Artist), Szymon Kowalczyk (Artist), Niewiadomoski Stanislaw (Composer)Lab

Label: DUX

The continuing popularity of Christmas carols in Poland, the on-going tradition of listening to and singing them in family circles and among friends, is a kind of phenomenon in present-day Europe. The present CD contains such works as Zygmunt Noskowskis Carol and O gwiazdeczko with music by Kazimierz Lubomirski. Some of the recorded carols have fallen into oblivion. Others, such as O gwiazdo Betlejemska have undergone a revival and are sung by both choirs and church congregations. Polish Lyrical Songs for Christmas features soprano Barbara Zarnowiecka and pianist Szymon Kowalczyk.

2014
by Kolner Akademie and Johann Friedrich Agricola
Label: CPO
CPOs annual tradition of releasing freshly produced alternatives to Bach's Christmas Oratorio during the fall season when Christmas is just around the corner continues with this release of three cantatas by the Bach pupil Johann Agricola (1720-74). After receiving instruction in composition from Bach, Agricola became a chamber musician and court composer under King Frederick II and later Prussian court chapel master following Carl Graun's death. His compositions, mainly oratorios, cantatas, songs, and operas, display influence from composers such as Hasse and Graun.

Each Christmas season at Brigham Young University over 500 vocalists and instrumentalists celebrate the season in song. With a strong belief in the spiritual character of music, the BYU students and conductors have achieved performances that are alive, fresh, and heartfelt-performances that overcome boundaries and draw people together.

The music on this CD was recorded during the live performances of the December 2013 "Celebration of Christmas" concerts. The BYU Singers, BYU Concert Choir, BYU Men's Chorus, BYU Women's Chorus, and BYU Philharmonic Orchestra inspire listeners with their spirit, talent, and performance artistry.

These musical organizations are known for their unity, due in part to the superb technical proficiency achieved under choral conductors Ronald Staheli, Rosalind Hall and Jean Applonie as well as Philharmonic conductor Kory Katseanes. As one critic observed, "The spiritual element is present in each piece the choirs sing."

The astonishingly prolific John Gardner has yet to receive his due rewards, and still remains one of the most original and intriguing figures in English 20th-century music. The Cantata for Christmas, scored for double choir and small orchestra, receives its world premiere recording here. It opens similarly to Honegger s Christmas Cantata, written about 14 years earlier,
and uses the German Advent chorale Wie schon leuchtet. The texts used include Ode on the birth of our Saviour by Robert Herrick, which is followed by Les anges dans nos campagnes set in the original French. The album also includes eight Christmas carols, some using the traditional melodies, like Good King Wenceslas.
