Editor's Note: This is probably a new cover. There was a release in 1988 using another cover.

Christmas in Leipzig was always a busy time for Johann Sebastian Bach. Each year between December 25 and January 6, a period of just 13 days, no less than six cantatas were required, as well as other concerted music. Bach's first Christmas in Leipzig as the kantor of the Thomaskirche, 1723-24, was preceded by an extraordinary period of creativity. At this time he composed or revised for the 13-day period from Christmas Day to Epiphany the first version of the Magnificat (BWV 243a) and six cantatas.

A Few Christmas Gems in Ex Cathedra's Recording of Liz Dilnot Johnson's Choral Works: "Gentle Flame"

A Few Christmas Gems in Ex Cathedra's Recording of Liz Dilnot Johnson's Choral Works: "Gentle Flame"

Editor's Note: Description is the label's own.

We are thrilled to present this CD of music by Liz Dilnot Johnson in her 60th birthday year. We have loved working closely with Liz for several years, as she explains in the booklet:

“This album celebrates my creative relationship with Ex Cathedra over the last nine years and as [a] composer-in-residence since 2021. The recording was made in three intense days at the Bradshaw Hall (Royal Birmingham Conservatoire), the warm but clearly defined acoustic revealing the choir’s exceptional vocal skills.

“The first eight tracks span nearly forty years of my composing life, up to A Wild Midwinter Carol [2022] – the first of my new set of ‘eco-songs’. The second half of the album presents When A Child Is A Witness – requiem for refugees – one of the largest and most ambitious collaborations with Ex Cathedra so far, and winner of an Ivors Composer Award 2022.”

Editors notes: This album includes four Christmas tracks:

For This Babe

Magi

Gentle Flame

A wild midwinter carol

Blake Reimagined (a la Christmas according to the composer)

Christmas Carols Blog: Our thanks to the composer for informing us of the Christmas pieces on this album.

Jacques Arcadelt's Missa Noe Noe presented in Ridercar Recording by Capella Mediterranea

Jacques Arcadelt's Missa Noe Noe presented in Ridercar Recording by Capella Mediterranea

Editor's Note: We missed this one. This was released in 2023. Description below is the label's own.

Given that not one of the Masses by Jacques Arcadelt was included in our boxed set that revealed his immense musical personality to the world, we now remedy this situation with an indispensable addition.

Leonardo Garcia Alarcon chose the Missa Noe Noe, which is presented here in the context of the Christmas liturgy. We have also included motets not only by Arcadelt but also by Josquin Desprez, as he was the great model for musicians of his generation.

The recording ends resoundingly with Josquin’s imposing "Benedicta es coelorum regina" for six voices, although in an expanded version for twelve voices by Jean Guyot de Châtelet (1512 – 1588): another Walloon composer to be discovered!

2013: Working List of New Classical and Choral Christmas Recording

2013: Working List of New Classical and Choral Christmas Recording

Compiled by R. Rojas

The descriptions below are those of record labels or the ensembles, and not reviews by the Christmas Carols Blog. Some have been altered for better web viewing. Don't fret, we left the King's English intact. Links to the ensemble or record label have been included to make purchasing easier. The Bach Festival Society of Winter Park has the distinction of being the third oldest, continuously operating, Bach Festival in the United States, as well as being Central Florida's oldest operating performing arts organization.

The Bach Festival Society is well known internationally and has enjoyed a long tradition of bringing world-class talent to Central Florida. Since its inception, the Society has expanded its offerings beyond the annual Bach Festival to include Choral Masterworks and Visiting Artists performances, as well as a variety of educational and community outreach programs to encourage participation in music at all levels.

The Christmas season represents a time for peace and hope, and through our music we express these sentiments. May this recording be part of what opens your heart to the joy of this special season and may it continue to resonate with you throughout the year.

On the cusp of our 80th anniversary, the Bach Festival Society has a musical legacy in Winter Park and Central Florida, but our holiday traditions are much more recent.

The Society has been associated with the Morse Museum of American Art through it's annual Christmas in the Park festivities for almost 30 years and has been producing it's own Christmas concerts for the past 10. Christmas may have come late to us, but we have embraced it in a grand fashion.

The Society proudly presents this holiday celebration featuring original versions of traditional favorites, with many arrangements written just for us. From all of us at the Bach Festival, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

The celebration of the Nativity has always been a source of inspiration for composers. The different elements of the evangelical narrative evoke numerous images: tender feelings before the Baby Jesus; the gentleness of his mother, the Virgin Mary; the procession of the three Wise Men; the angelic choirs in Heaven; and these shepherds gathered in the manger. All that appears in the musical repertoire linked to this holiday, as well as the presence of colourful instrumentations and themes connected to folk traditions. This set, released by Ricercar, brings together all these elements, drawn from the repertoires of the Renaissance and Baroque eras.

Welcome all Wonders: A Christmas Cantata is a large-scale work for choir, organ, and trumpet spanning 15 movements. It celebrates the Christmas story through an imaginative selection and juxtaposition of poetry and liturgical texts, and provides a multifaceted telling of the familiar narrative.

The celebratory aspects of Christmas are tainted by darker themes that are inherent to the story but are easily overlooked, culminating in an enlightened and engaging work that explores the Christmas story in a profound manner.

The Choir of The Queen’s College, Oxford is among the finest and most active university choirs in the UK. Its wide-ranging repertory includes a rich array of Renaissance and Baroque music and contemporary works.

Gary Schocker is best known as the most published composer for the flute, but also is a world-renowned flutist. He has turned his attention to composing for solo harp, an instrument he is now playing.

For this disc he has arranged 21 favorite Christmas carols for harp, performed by the ever-popular harpist Emily Mitchell. Ms. Mitchell's 30-year career includes numerous recordings, as well as performing and teaching around the world. In the words of the Washington Post, "Mitchell commands a vivid palette of colors and uses them with imagination."
